Therefore, in order to be successful in pursuing medical assisting careers, it is beneficial to know a little bit about the field you are interested in becoming involved in.
When working in medical assisting careers, you will be called upon to take on a number of different duties. Some of the duties that are typically associated with medical assisting careers include many different administrative duties. These include scheduling patient appointments, handling correspondence with other medical professionals and with patients, greeting patients, completing insurance forms, answering telephones, and making arrangements with laboratory services and hospital admissions on behalf of patients.
The duties that you may be expected to follow when you enter into medical assisting careers can vary according to State law. For example, some states will allow you to take the medical histories as well as the vital signs of patients while others will not allow you to interact with patients in this way. Depending upon the state, you might also be called upon to help get patients prepared for the physician to perform an examination.
In some medical assisting careers, you will also be called upon to collect laboratory specimens. You may also be expected to dispose of supplies that have become contaminated and you may also be required to sterilize medical instruments. Medical assisting careers may also involve providing patients with instructions for preparing for medical procedures. You may also need to call to authorize refills of medication. In other states, however, medical assisting careers are limited to only performing administrative duties. Therefore, it is important to know the limitations within your state of residence in order to know for sure what types of duties you will be able to perform.
